Rejection: A Key To Success?

You wake up with a jolt. It is a beautiful day, the sun’s rays are warming your skin as you have your morning coffee by the window. However, the nagging sensation remains, will you get the job?

This story is not an unusual one. According to the Labour Force Survey, there are currently 1.46 million unemployed people in the United Kingdom. Furthermore, the level of competition is at its highest, with jobs being replaced in the blink of an eye by younger, cheaper and more qualified Millennials.

However, should you really fear rejection? Stefani Germanotta, also known as Lady Gaga, was dropped by the record label Island Def Jam after just three months. When she heard about it, she “cried so hard she couldn’t talk.” The pop star is now the owner of six Grammy Awards, an activist for LGBT rights and worth $59 million, according to Forbes.

On a literary note, Theodor Seuss Geisel, known as Dr Seuss, had his first book rejected by 27 diverse publishers. He went on to become one of the most renowned children’s authors due to classics such as “The Cat in the Hat”. Over 600 million copies of his books have been sold worldwide.

The struggling actor story is a common one. An executive took Harrison Ford into his office after his first small movie role and stated that he’d never make it in the film industry. Since then however, Ford has been an actor for six decades, with iconic movies such as “Indiana Jones” and “Star Wars” under his belt.

It truly is never too late. J.K. Rowling was a destitute single mother living off welfare when she decided to pick up her pen. Rejection is the key to success because it molds and transforms you. It creates a stronger version of you.
